The 45th edition of Big 5 Global marked its opening day at the Dubai World Trade Centre, where government leaders, industry innovators and policymakers gathered to explore the power of construction in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region which boasts a $9 trillion construction projects pipeline.

Day 1 of Big 5 Global featured a dynamic programme of strategic summits across the co-located events LiveableCitiesX, Future FM and GeoWorld. These included the Big 5 Global Leaders’ Summit, GeoWorld Summit, and IFMA Global | Middle East Summit, where policymakers, government leaders and industry innovators convened for a day of insightful discussions.
His Excellency Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure opened Big 5 Global Leaders’ Summit with a keynote address setting the tone for visionary leadership in the sector. The summit also featured Fred Mills, Founder of The B1M emphasized the transformative role of the construction industry. He said: “There is no other industry where you can make a bigger difference on this planet than construction. Every time they say impossible, we [the construction industry] prove them wrong.”
Running in parallel, GeoWorld Summit explored the latest geospatial technology and data advancements. Speaking at the summit, Dr. Hasni Ghedira, Director of Research Engagement at Mohamed bin MBZUAI (Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence) said: “Leveraging GIS and urban hydrology is essential for identifying vulnerable areas during extreme weather conditions and implementing effective solutions in the region.”
The IFMA Global | Middle East Summit brought together FM industry leaders from around the world to redefine the future of facility management, focusing on innovations and strategies to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.
Strategic partnerships highlight innovation in construction
On the exhibition floor, leading companies finalized key deals and partnerships that highlight the event’s role in driving business growth.
BAUER Maschinen GmbH and Pinnacle International Piling signed a multi-million-euro agreement for the addition of the BAUER BG36 piling rig to Pinnacle’s fleet. Hermann Schrattenthaler, Executive Director at BAUER Maschinen GmbH, commented: “This milestone deal demonstrates our shared commitment to delivering cutting-edge, sustainable solutions for the region’s infrastructure demands.”
In another significant partnership, WhiteHelmet, a Saudi-based construction tech company, signed an MoU with India’s SB Scaffolding. The agreement introduces WhiteHelmet’s 360-degree documentation and communication solutions to India, marking a transformative moment in regional construction and contracting innovation and showcasing a true example of the global deals happening at the event this year.
Country pavilions drive international strength
The event also celebrated international cooperation through its vibrant country pavilions such as Turkiye, China, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Italy and others.
Among them, the Saudi Export Development Authority, represented by the “Made in Saudi” programme, hosting 55 Saudi companies showcasing innovations in construction. At a glittering awards ceremony held at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel last night, dmg events, organizers of Big 5 Global announced the winners of Big 5 Global Impact Awards under 17 awards.

As Big 5 Global 2024 draws to a close, it marks the conclusion of LiveableCitiesX, Future FM and GeoWorld, which have addressed the need for new urbanism principles and cutting-edge innovations to transform cities. Prof. Carlos Moreno, Scientific Director at IAE Paris-Sorbonne and visionary behind the “15-Minute City” concept, captivated attendees with his call for a paradigm shift in urban planning.
“It is time to reflect on the future of cities; it is time for changing our paradigms, including in this part of the world; it is time to offer the new generations a new urbanism. This is not only urbanism for tomorrow, but urbanism for the 21st century,” stated Prof. Moreno. He highlighted how the proximity city model can transform Middle Eastern cities by promoting walkable, inclusive communities, reducing car dependency and enhancing climate resilience. “I dream of the Middle East becoming an exemplary region of proxilience, which refers to proximity as resilience,” he added.
Strategic partnerships and milestones
In a significant move to address global infrastructure needs, the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Urban Development of Côte d’Ivoire signed strategic MoUs with Royal Gulf Contracting, ZDS Development Consortium, and the Abu Dhabi Fund. These partnerships aim to construct 17,000 housing units through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, reflecting the ministry’s commitment to tackling the country’s housing deficit.
In another milestone, Dubai Financial Market-listed Deyaar Development announced the launch of Park Five, an innovative luxury residence community in Dubai Production City. Valued at $408.4 million (AED1.5 billion), the new development focuses on wellness-centric living and community engagement. Saeed Mohammed Al Qatami, CEO at Deyaar Development, said: “Park Five has been developed in alignment with Dubai’s vision of creating sustainable and innovative urban spaces that enhance the quality of life for residents. This project reflects our commitment to delivering world-class, sustainable and value-driven developments, responding to the global investor interest in UAE real estate.”
Technological advancements continue to shine
In another key development, PropTechBuzz signed a strategic MoU with the Dubai PropTech Business Group (DPBG), positioning Dubai as a global hub for PropTech innovation. This partnership aims to foster growth through community engagement, events, and resources, connecting global PropTech companies to Dubai’s burgeoning real estate market. “We’re excited to bring global connections to Dubai’s vibrant real estate market,” said Ravi Kumar Sapata, CEO of PropTechBuzz.

The 45th edition of Big 5 Global, co-located with LiveableCitiesX, Future FM, and GeoWorld, concluded with unprecedented success at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 26 to 29 November 2024.
Under the support of the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the event welcomed 85,000 attendees from across the globe, marking a significant milestone in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region’s construction and urban development sector.
A global platform for collaboration
The event’s remarkable 75% year-on-year increase in international attendance solidified its reputation as the ultimate meeting point for the construction and urban development sectors. Speaking on the successful 45th edition, Josine Heijmans, Senior Vice President at dmg events, said: “The phenomenal growth in international participation underscores the value Big 5 Global delivers to stakeholders from over 165 countries. Innovation took centre stage at Big 5 Global with the Start-Up City Pitch Competition, supported by the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy, one of the three chambers operating under the umbrella of Dubai Chambers. Showcasing groundbreaking solutions that reshape the construction industry, the pitch competition crowned winners for their role in reshaping traditional practices in the construction sector.
The competition winners, awarded by the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy, included Vecros securing first place and a prize of AED 50,000 for its Spatial-AI-powered drones designed for construction and other industries. In second place, Ailytics earned AED 30,000 for its AI-powered video surveillance systems (VSS) that enhance safety and boost productivity. Nirwana claimed third place with a prize of AED 20,000 for its generative AI tool that personalizes interior spaces. Simultaneously, Vecros was also awarded Big 5 Global prize, which included a bespoke marketing package valued at $25,000.
The success of the competition underscores the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy’s commitment to unlocking the full potential of digital sectors and advancing Dubai’s journey towards its ambitious future as a leading global hub for technology and innovation, in line with the objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33).
Industry highlights and partnerships
Big 5 Global witnessed significant industry milestones and partnerships as exhibitors showcased groundbreaking innovations, signed strategic agreements and introduced cutting-edge technologies.
At the event, Liebherr Middle East held a landmark handover ceremony, delivering the HS 8130.1 Heavy Duty Cycle crane to NMDC Group. Known for its versatility, the crane is ideal for dynamic soil compaction and dredging projects, highlighting its role in large-scale infrastructure development.
Meanwhile, Falcon Motors secured the exclusive UAE dealership for XCMG, the world’s third-largest construction machinery company. XCMG’s cutting-edge fleet, including the world’s heaviest wheeled crane and electric mining trucks, represents a leap forward in sustainable construction technology.
Another exhibitor, Würth Group, a global leader in fastening and assembly materials launched its new division Würth Construction Gulf at the event.
